AMM 201 - Automotive Engines Lab


Credits: 5
LAB hours per week: 10
The student will receive practical application concerning the complete rebuilding of the automobile engine. This instruction will include checking guides, and installing rod, main and cam bearings, timing gears and chain, pistons and rings. emphasis is on proficiency in the use of the micrometer to measure wear of cylinders, pistons, and crankshafts. This class is structured to provide the student with the background and knowledge to pass the A-1 ASE certification examinations.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C - or higher in AMM 110  and AMM 111 .
Corequisite(s): AMM 200 .
Course Outcomes:
  • Identify common engine components.
  • Use specialty engine rebuilding tools.
  • Employ engine assembly safety procedures.
  • Diagnose wear patterns on engine parts from both 4-and 6-cylinder engines.
  • Evaluate engine parts for replacement.
  • Perform necessary engine repairs.
  • Reassemble an engine.
  • Identify the different types of cam drives.
  • Replace a timing chain assembly.
  • Replace a timing belt assembly.
