MATH 046 - Corequisite Algebra for MATH& 146

MATH 046 is an intermediate algebra course to be taken concurrently with MATH& 146 . The course focuses on developing and applying numeric, algebraic, graphic, and metacognitive skills necessary for success in MATH& 146 , Introduction to Statistics. This course has Pass/Not Pass grading.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in MATH 071 , MATH 014 , CAP 014 , HSC 014 , or AMATH 106 , appropriate math placement, or permission of the Mathematics Department.
Corequisite(s): MATH& 146 .
Recommended: READ 088  or higher.
Course Outcomes:
  • Use Order of Operations to evaluate expressions including those with fractions, square roots, absolute value, plus-minus, and positive integer exponents.
  • Calculate with and convert between decimals, fractions, and percentages and interpret their significance in a variety of contexts.
  • Convert between decimal and scientific notation.
  • Translate between simple word phrases and mathematical notation, using variables to represent quantities where necessary.
  • Determine whether a number satisfies an inequality and use the real number line to justify this determination.
  • Evaluate a formula given a list of variable values.
  • Solve single variable linear equations and proportions.
  • Solve a multivariable equation or formula for a given variable.
  • Solve simple equations involving the square root.
  • Identify whether a relationship is linear and describe its defining characteristics.
  • Create and use graphs of points and lines in the plane.
  • Generate an equation of a line given sufficient characteristics.
  • Create, use, and interpret linear models in a variety of authentic settings.
  • Read and interpret graphs, charts, and tables.
  • Calculate the area of a rectangle and estimate non-rectangular areas.
  • Identify Greek letters alpha, sigma, mu, rho, and chi.
  • Demonstrate techniques that improve learning and problem solving in statistics.
  • Use technology as a tool for calculating and graphing.
  • Explain the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.
