READ 088 - Reading Improvement Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 Develops an understanding of the reading process and appreciation for the importance of reading for pleasure, personal growth, and academic success. Encourages and supports improvement of reading strategies to improve comprehension, critical thinking, and reading speed to better meet college reading demands. Prerequisite(s): Placement into READ 088 or CASAS Level 5. Course Outcomes:
- Evaluate one’s reading process of fiction and nonfiction using the following reading strategies:
- Interpret explicit and implicit meaning of the text using citations for specific textual evidence to support conclusions.
- Analyze the central ideas, themes, and supporting details of a text.
- Analyze how point of view, tone, purpose, and specific word choices, including technical connotative, and figurative, shape meaning.
- Analyze the structure of texts and how parts relate to each other and the whole.
- Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively.
- Evaluate specific claims in an argument for validity, relevance, and sufficiency.
- Analyze two or more texts or similar topics in order to compare the author’s approaches.
- Manage the academic demands of college classes independently.
