PSYC 251 - Psychosocial Issues In Healthcare V Credits: 1 LEC hours per week: 1 Examines some determinants of health and illness including social, psychological, environmental, spiritual, and cultural dimensions across the lifespan and within the context of healthcare. This is a continuation of content from PSYC 150 , PSYC 151 and PSYC 250 . Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Nursing Program; Grade C or better in PSYC 150 , PSYC 151 and PSYC 250 . Corequisite(s): NURS 201 and NURS 211 . Course Outcomes:
- Explain the theoretical perspectives and hypotheses regarding the etiology of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (hereditary/genetics, neurodevelopmental/environmental, neurotransmitter/immunologic).
- Discuss the socioeconomic impact of psychotic mental health disorders (social stigma, homelessness and poverty, availability of community resources).
- Compare and contrast the emotional and behavioral indicator of selected mental health disorders:
- Personality disorders
- Mood disorders
- Anxiety disorders
- Compare and contrast the mental health disorders seen in children with those common to adults or geriatric clients.
- Describe how a client’s cultural mental health beliefs impact therapeutic interventions and treatment modalities.

- Behavioral and emotional manifestations of psychotic disorders
- Personality, mood, and anxiety disorders
- Developmental factors influencing mental health in children and adolescents
