PSYC 150 - Psychosocial Issues In Healthcare I & II

Examines some determinants of health and illness including social, psychological, environmental, spiritual, and cultural dimensions across the lifespan and within the context of healthcare.
Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Nursing Program.
Corequisite(s): NURS 100  and NURS 110  or instructor permission.
Course Outcomes:
  • Evaulate the cultural meaning of health, wellness, and illness.
  • Describe how various health belief models can be used to accomplish the goals of Healthy People 2020.
  • Compare and contrast therapeutic communication techniques that facilitate communication and focus on client concerns.
  • Summarize the development of self-concept and self-esteem using the framework described by Erikson.
  • Evaluate health disparities among racial and ethnic groups.
  • Explain how the five constructs of the “Cultural Competence” model result in culturally responsive care.
  • Discuss how developmental stage, support system, and culture affect the grief response.
  • Compare and contrast the alterations in cognition, reasoning and mood observed in delerium and dementia.
