WELD 212 - Pipe Welding Lab I


Credits: 1-6
LAB hours per week: 12
This course introduces students to Pipe Welding safety, industry practices, and processes in a laboratory setting. Students will learn, practice, and apply skills needed for Pipe Welding with the Shielded Metal Arc Welding process. Students will prepare projects to weld using basic blueprint reading skills and complete lab practice while employing professional, ethical, and safe welding shop behavior.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in WELD 113  and WELD 123 .
Corequisite(s): WELD 202  and WELD 222 .
Course Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate proper set-up, safe operation, maintenance, and inspection of Welding machines used for pipe welding applications.
  • Demonstrate appropriate fitment and positioning of pipe.
  • Perform proper Shielded Metal Arc Welding technique on Pipe up to 8” in diameter
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Pipe Welding essential variables.
  • Perform visual inspection, including defects, and discontinuities of Pipe Welding.
  • Demonstrate proper filler metal selection.

  1. The importance of the Pipe Welder qualification including limitations, essential variables, expiration, and disqualification.
  2. Pipe Schedules and Diameter recognition.
  3. Filler metal Class, Specification, and selection.
  4. Pipe grades and applications.
  5. Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  6. Pipe Welding techniques and mathematics in welding.
  7. Handling, preparing, and fitment of pipe welds.
