BIOL 130 - General Ecology Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 4 LAB hours per week: 2 This lab science course studies the interrelationships of organisms with their environment. This course is intended for either science or non-science majors in fulfillment of the general education lab science requirements. Through an understanding of general ecological principles contemporary problems such as pollution, endangered species, energy shortages, and over-population are addressed. Field trips and lab exercises support lecture discussions. Formerly: BIO 130. Prerequisite(s): ENGL 087 or AENG 100 with a grade of C or higher or appropriate placement; or permission of the Science Division Chair or designee. Recommended: READ 088 or higher. Course Outcomes:
- Apply major terms, vocabulary, methods and concepts relevant to general ecology.
- Explain current issues in society and examine their relationship to ecology.
- Analyze ecological problems using the principles of the scientific method, including observation, hypotheses and testing predictions.
- Explore the relationship between man and the environment.
- Apply basic ecological and environmental principles to new and existing situations.
- Analyze population and community dynamics using computer/mathematical models.
- Use laboratory equipment safely and with technical skill.
