BIOL& 175 - Human Biology With Lab

Credits: 5
LEC hours per week: 4
LAB hours per week: 2
BIOL& 175 is a biology course designed for non-science majors that presents a general overview of the human body including structure (anatomy), organization and function (physiology). This course has a lab component and will survey all of the systems in the human body. This course will investigate the range of human organization from molecules to cells to organs to organ systems to the organism as a whole. This course is a lab version of BIOL& 170 ; students may not earn credit for both BIOL& 170  and BIOL& 175.
Prerequisite(s): ENGL 087  or AENG 100  with a grade of C or higher or appropriate placement; or permission of the Science Division Chair or designee.
Recommended: READ 088  or higher.
Course Outcomes:
  • Explain the interrelationship between anatomy (structure) and physiology (function) as it relates to the different systems of the human body.
  • Explain the concept of homeostasis and how the different systems of the body interact in order to maintain homeostasis; including the impact of homeostatic imbalances.
  • Describe the events that occur to various body systems as a part of development from fertilization through old age and how those events are shaped by chromosomal inheritance
  • Synthesize ideas to make a connection between knowledge of anatomy and physiology and real-world situations, including healthy lifestyle decisions.
  • Employ information technology in order to seek, find, evaluate and use information in order to gain an appreciation of the human body.
  • Apply specific terminology associated with the human body.
  • Demonstrate an applied understanding of anatomy and physiology through laboratory exercises.
