 | OCEA& 101 - Introduction to Oceanography W/LabCredits: 5
 LEC hours per week: 4
 LAB hours per week: 2
Fundamental principles of ocean science; the geography and geology of ocean basin; chemistry of sea water; physical dynamics of currents, waves, and tides; coastal processes; and the biology of diverse ecosystems. Lab work required. Formerly: OCE 101.
Prerequisite(s): ENGL 087  or AENG 100  with a grade of C or higher or appropriate placement; or permission of the Science Division Chair or designee.
Recommended: READ 088  or higher and CHEM& 110  or high school chemistry.
 Course Outcomes:

Course Topics:Describe how geology, chemistry, physics, and biology are all applied in ocean systemsDiagram the theory of plate tectonics and explain plate interactions using features of the Earth’s surfaceIdentify common elements found in ocean water and sedimentsExplain the properties of ocean water, such as temperature and salinity and how those can be used to explain the layered structure of the oceans, the generation of horizontal and vertical ocean currents, and the geographic distribution of marine organismsDescribe the relationship between energy and waves and diagram the parts of a wave (length, frequency, amplitude).Demonstrate knowledge of specific terms and concepts associated with ocean ecology, ecosystems and the classification of marine organisms

Course Attribute(s): Lab Course, Natural ScienceHistory of ocean use and oceanographic investigationsBasic geography of ocean basinsEvolution of ocean basins (plate tectonics)Oceanic sediment and sediment transport mechanismsOcean chemistry and physical characteristics of ocean waterSurface and subsurface circulation of ocean waters (currents)Origin and description of waves and tidesCoastlines and their managementMarine organisms and their classificationMarine ecology and ecosystem description (estuaries, coral reefs, deep sea vents)Pollution of the oceans and role of oceans in global climate change (environmental issues)
