BIOL& 160 - General Biology W/Lab Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 4 LAB hours per week: 2 This is an intensive course designed as a prerequisite for BIOL& 241 and BIOL& 260 , and is intended specifically for students pursuing careers in Nursing or other Allied Health fields. Topics include cell chemistry, structure, metabolism, energetics, cell division, and genetic principles, and the basics of DNA technology. This course does not satisfy the prerequisite for BIOL& 212 or BIOL& 213 . Formerly: BIO 151. Prerequisite(s): ENGL 087 or AENG 100 with a grade of C or higher or appropriate placement; or permission of the Science Division Chair or designee. Recommended: READ 088 or higher. Course Outcomes:
- Apply major terms, vocabulary, methods and concepts relevant to general biology.
- Apply the basic principles of inorganic and chemistry as they apply to basic cellular processes.
- Describe the basic metabolic processes that occur in cells.
- Identify and list examples of unifying principles of biology as revealed in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.
- Evaluate how biological processes such as homeostasis, energy transfer and the relationship between biological structure and function manifest in living organisms.
- Examine how energy production within a cell relates to cellular metabolic pathways.
- Apply the concepts of Mendelian genetics to describe various patterns of inheritance.
- Examine how genetic variability is ensured through the mechanisms of mutation, crossing over, and random fertilization.
- Interpret and analyze data collected from the laboratory.
- Use laboratory equipment safely and with technical skill.
