BIOL& 241 - Human Anatomy & Physiology I

Credits: 5
LEC hours per week: 4
LAB hours per week: 2
This course is the first of a two-quarter sequence that studies the structure and function of the human body. This course is intended for Nursing and Allied Health majors in fulfillment of the pre-Nursing (or health care related) lab science requirements. Topics include introduction to the human body, histology, the skeletal, muscular, nervous, and the digestive systems. Laboratory work may include mammalian dissections, online simulations, model study, and microscopy.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in BIOL& 160  or BIOL& 211 .
Course Outcomes:
  • Identify the components of the skeletal, muscular, nervous, and digestive systems and describe their location in anatomical terms.
  • Apply correct anatomical terminology to describe organs, tissues, body landmarks, cellular structures, and major body movements and to express direction and location in the body.
  • Use anatomical and physiological vocabulary to communicate, written and orally.
  • Recognize and describe the relationship between the anatomical structure of an organ and how it correlates to its function.
  • Observe and describe differences in tissue types to predict their role in the normal structure and functioning of an organ.
  • Relate the histology of the major body tissues to their functions in the body.
  • Describe the principle of homeostasis and the use of feedback loops to control physiological systems and explain how an inability to maintain homeostasis can lead to disease.
  • Explain and analyze the normal anatomy, functions, and mechanisms of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and digestive systems and predict the effects of disease in those systems.
  • Use discipline-specific laboratory materials, such as dissection tools, models, and compound microscopes, to analyze the structure of tissues and preserved specimens.
Course Topics:
  1. Introduction to the human body, histology, the skeletal, muscular, nervous, and the digestive systems.
  2. Laboratory work may include mammalian dissections, online simulations, model study, and microscopy.
