BIOL& 213 - Majors Plant

This course is the third of a three quarter sequence of biology courses intended for biology majors and other pre-professional students planning to transfer to a four-year university. It is an introductory plant biology course that can be taken in fulfillment of the AS Degree (Option I) lab science requirements. Topics include: an introduction to the basic structure and function of stems, roots, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds, growth, hormones, plant movements, photosynthesis, genetics, plant breeding, plant taxonomy and a survey of the kingdoms Protista, Fungi, and Plantae. Formerly: BIO 152.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of D or higher in BIOL& 211  
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply major terms, vocabulary, methods and concepts relevant to botany.
  • Explain current issues in society and examine their relationship to botany.
  • Analyze botanical problems using the principles of the scientific method, including observation, hypotheses and testing predictions.
  • Explain how and why all life is dependent on plants.
  • Discuss attributes of living organisms including chemical and physical bases of life.
  • Identify practical human uses each for roots, wood and stems, and leaves.
  • Distinguish, draw, compare and contrast utilizing knowledge of the origin, development, form, function, strategies, and adaptations of: plant tissues, roots (specialized), stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds in labs and projects.
  • Identify factors that control dormancy and explain how dormancy may be broken both naturally and artificially.
  • Diagram pathway, movement, and utilization of water in plants.
  • Outline metabolic concepts of photosynthesis, respiration, and additional pathways.
  • Contrast growth, differentiation, and development and distinguish among nutrients, vitamins, and plant hormones.
  • Apply propagation techniques.
  • Use a dichotomous key to identify plants.
  • Recognize the features that members of Kingdoms share with each other and what distinguishes them from other Kingdoms.
  • Use laboratory equipment safely and with technical skill.
