MEDA 127 - Clinical Procedures B


Credits: 5
LEC hours per week: 2
LAB hours per week: 6
This is the second of two clinical procedure courses, and it provides a foundation in basic patient exam techniques, minor procedures, basic diagnostic laboratory techniques and procedures commonly performed at a medical office or clinic. The lab portion of this course provides practice in these techniques and integrates the techniques and skills acquired in previous courses.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in MEDA 126 .
Course Outcomes:
  • Instruct and prepare a patient for a procedure or a treatments or procedures
  • Assist provider with a patient exam.
  • Perform patient screening using established protocols specific to skills taught in this course.
  • Identify subjective and objective information.
  • Document patient care accurately in the medical record.
  • Identify Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived tests associated with common diseases. 
  • Collect specimens and perform:
    • CLIA waived hematology test
    • CLIA waived chemistry test
    • CLIA waived urinalysis
    • CLIA waived immunology test
    • CLIA waived microbiology test
  • Identify quality assurance practices in healthcare.
  • Perform a quality control measure.
  • Identify appropriate vaccinations based on an immunization schedule.
  • Calculate proper dosages of medication for administration.
  • Verify the rules of medication administration using the Six Rights of Medications Administration:
    • right patient
    • right medication
    • right dose
    • right route
    • right time
    • right documentation
  • Select proper sites for parental medication administration.
  • Administer oral medication.
  • Administer parental (excluding IV) medications.
  • Record laboratory test results and measurements into the patient’s record.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrate empathy for patients’ concerns and reassure patients.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and tactfulness.
  • Demonstrate active listening and respond to non-verbal communication.
  • Perform the following procedures:
    • electrocardiography
    • venipuncture
    • capillary puncture
    • pulmonary function testing
  • Correctly use and pronounce medical terminology in health care interactions.
  • Input patient data using an electronic system.
  • Identify the medical assistant’s role in telehealth and participate in a telehealth interaction with a patient.
  • Perform an inventory of supplies.
  • Comply with safety practices
Course Topics:
  1. Medication administration, including oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal, and rectal routes
  2. Documentation of medication administration
  3. Lab requisitions and reports
  4. Patient instruction prior to laboratory testing
  5. Guidelines and procedures for collection of laboratory specimens of CLIA waved tests such as hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, immunology and microbiology tests.
  6. Guidelines and procedures for safe collection, storage, and transportation of laboratory specimens to an outside lab
  7. Venipuncture
  8. Electrocardiograms (ECG)
  9. Common pulmonary function testing in the physician’s office/clinic
  10. Medical assistant’s role in examinations and diagnostic studies of the reproductive system
  11. Telehealth: Medical assistant’s response to patient concerns
