WELD 171 - Aluminum Gas Tungsten Arc Welding

Credits: 1-9
LAB hours per week: 18
This course introduces students to Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) for aluminum, and related safety, industry practices, and processes in a laboratory setting. Students will learn, practice, and apply skills needed for safe welding processes and operation of GTAW equipment while employing safe, professional, and ethical welding shop behavior.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in WELD 170 .
Corequisite(s): WELD 105 .
Course Outcomes:
  • Practice safety essentials, including
    • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use
    • Shop safety
    • Equipment safety
  • Interpret and explain blueprints and the various elements of a print.
  • Design a blueprint
  • Demonstrate how to power up the power sources and select proper settings for Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).
  • Deposit a fillet weld in 2F, 3F, and 4F positions and a groove weld in 1G, 2G, and 3G positions.
  • Safely operate a chop saw, band saw, and skill saw.
  • Set-up and program the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) plasma cutter and CNC hydraulic bender
  • Employ actuate measuring with tape measure, rulers, and calipers.
  • Prepare and clean pieces before welds
Course Topics:
  1. Aluminum Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) safety, industry practices, and processes
  2. Blueprint reading
  3. Filler metal classification for aluminum processes.
  4. Equipment set-up and safe operation of:
    • Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) machine
    • CNC plasma cutter
  5. CNC hydraulic bender
