WELD 170 - Aluminum Gas Metal Arc Welding GMAW Credits: 1-9 LAB hours per week: 18 This course introduces students to Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) for aluminum, and related safety, industry practices, and processes in a laboratory setting. Students will learn, practice, and apply welding skills on a variety of aluminum joint designs that are directly relevant to the work required in the industry while employing safe, professional, and ethical welding shop behavior. Corequisite(s): Students must enroll in WELD 104 and WELD 170. Course Outcomes:
- Practice safety essentials, including
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use
- Shop safety
- Equipment safety
- Interpret and explain blueprints and the various elements of a print
- Demonstrate how to power up the power sources and select proper settings for Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW).
- Deposit a fillet weld in 2F, 3F, and 4F positions and a groove weld in 1G, 2G, and 3G positions.
- Safely operate a chop saw, band saw, and skill saw.
- Set-up and program the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) plasma cutter and CNC hydraulic bender.
- Employ actuate measuring with tape measure, rulers, and calipers

- Blueprint reading
- Filler metal classification for aluminum processes.
- Equipment set-up and safe operation of:
- Manual plasma cutter
- CNC plasma cutter
- Manual sheet metal bender
- CNC hydraulic bender
