PHYS& 115 - General Physics II With Lab

Credits: 5
LEC hours per week: 4
LAB hours per week: 2
This is part two of an algebra-based physics sequence intended for non-physical science majors. Topics include mechanical properties of matter, behavior of fluids, harmonic motion and waves, basic thermodynamics, and an introduction to electricity. Lab work required. Formerly: PHYS 122.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in PHYS& 114 .
Course Outcomes:
  • Describe the behaviors of fluids under the influence of changes in pressure, temperature and mechanical forces.
  • Apply knowledge of vibrational energy to sound and human hearing.
  • Explain the transfer of thermal energy as it relates to changes in temperature, state of materials, and work done by heat engines
  • Describe the underlying properties of an electric field and the forces created by electric charge distributions.
  • Solve quantitative problems related to related to fluids, thermal energy, vibrational motion, and effects of electric charge distributions using algebra and trigonometry.
  • Design and carry out laboratory experiments that relate to fluids, thermal energy, vibrational motion, and effects of electric charge distributions
Course Topics:
  1. Static and dynamic behavior of fluids
  2. Thermal energy and thermodynamics
  3. Vibrations, oscillation, sound, and hearing
  4. Electric charge, force, and field
