ART 131 - Painting II

Intermediate course for exploration of the various methods of painting.
Prerequisite(s): ART 130  
Course Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate increased hand and eye coordination as applied to painting.
  • Explain and apply major terms, vocabulary, methods, concepts, and theories relevant to painting.
  • Use tools and materials proficiently.
  • Compose acrylic paintings from observation and imagination, employing different stylistic choices.
  • Demonstrate ethical and responsible use of media and information.

  1. Art vocabulary and painting terminology
  2. Color theory
  3. Types of brushes and brushstrokes
  4. Painting supports: paper, canvas, wood, board
  5. Acrylic painting techniques
  6. Composition
  7. Painting from observation
  8. The formal elements of art and the principles of design
  9. Continued study of the styles of art: naturalism, realism, semi-abstraction, abstraction
  10. Famous artists and the history of painting
  11. Developing stylistic choices and choosing one’s own subject matter
  12. Honing one’s own style of painting
  13. Ethical and responsible use of media and information
