ART 130 - Painting I Credits: 4 LEC hours per week: 3 LAB hours per week: 2 Exploration of the various methods of painting. Emphasis on composition and presentation of acrylic paintings. Also includes appreciation and study of paintings by major artists. Lab hours required and materials to be purchased. Course Outcomes:
- Demonstrate increased hand and eye coordination as applied to painting.
- Explain and apply major terms, vocabulary, methods, concepts, and theories relevant to painting.
- Experiment with new techniques.
- Construct acrylic paintings from observation and imagination.
- Demonstrate ethical and responsible use of media and information.

- Hand and eye coordination as applied to painting
- Art vocabulary and painting terminology
- Analysis and evaluation of paintings
- Color theory
- Types of brushes and brush strokes
- Painting supports: paper, canvas, wood, board
- Acrylic painting techniques; light washes, opaque techniques, impasto, knife painting, texturing, glazing
- Composition techniques
- Painting from observation
- The formal elements of art and the principles of design
- Introduction to the styles of art: naturalism, semi-abstraction, abstraction
- Ethical and responsible use of media and information
