EST 150 - Electric Motor and Motor Maintenance

This course teaches electrical and motor safety, motor applications and characteristics, installation, operation, performance, maintenance, and repair of all AC and DC series motors. Wiring for wye and delta applications is also covered. Electronically Commutated Motors (ECM) will be included in the instruction. NEMA and NEC codes will be applied for motor installation, operations, and maintenance. Other topics will include nameplate data, torque, efficiency, connections, reversing rotation, and instruments used for motor maintenance and testing.
Prerequisite(s): EST 131 , or grade of C or higher in EST 132 , or instructor permission.
Course Outcomes:
  • List the five rules of safe dress and the nine rules for safe electric motor operation.
  • Operate DC motors correctly in all applications.
  • Use a photo-tachometer to identify motor speed.
  • Calculate a load on gear-drive and belt-drive systems.
  • Determine torque measurement using a motor pony-break.
  • Identify motor current draw, motor efficiency, and input/output power, by using motor performance curves.
  • Operate AC single-phase motors using capacitor-start, permanent-capacitor, and two capacitor applications.
  • Determine resistor value using color code for bleed resistor.
  • Use apparent power calculation and power factor correction to determine capacitance.
  • Identify proper terminal connections on capacitors.
  • Operate three-phase induction motor both forward and reverse.
  • Describe connections for wye and delta uses in a three phase application.
  • Use NEC Article 430 to reference motors, conductors and controls.
  • Operate EMC 2.3, 3.0, and X13 ECM motors.
