EST 132 - Principles of Electricity AC Application

Credits: 5
LEC hours per week: 4
LAB hours per week: 2
Provides a practical application of alternating current (AC) generation and operational circuits. Typical wiring practices of single and three phase wiring of plugs, receptacles, lighting, panel, disconnects, conduit, capacitors, power and control transformers, DC generators, AC alternators, an introduction to DC and AC motors.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in EST 131  or instructor permission.
Course Outcomes:
  • Use basic electrical safety rules int he classroom, labs, and campus projects.
  • Use tools and measuring instruments properly.
  • Explain the relationship of resistance, inductance and capacitance in an AC circuit.
  • Differentiate between single-phase and three-phase circuits, panels, and motors.
  • Describe basic operating principles of three-phase motors.
  • Compare and contrast single-phase and three-phase voltages.
  • Determine branch and load circuits, over current protection, and wire sizing using National Electric Code standards.
  • Select conductors for a branch circuit using the national Electric Code standards.
  • Calculate capacitance and measure capacitors wired in series and parallel in circuits.
  • Calculate the power factor correction for an AC motor.
  • Connect a branch circuit to a panel breaker.
  • Assemble a fused disconnect and select correct fuse for the load using National Electric Code standards.
  • Assemble transformers in a Delta and Wye configuration for a load.
  • Describe different types and operations of transformers.
  • Analyze measurements of transformer winding outputs using turns ration calculations.
  • Connect receptacles, single-pole, three-way, and four-way switch.
