HIST& 214 - Pacific NW History

Survey of the growth and development of the Pacific Northwest Region from the early Native American societies to the present. The class focuses on the cultural, economic, political, and religious development of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho from jointly occupied territories to statehood. Special emphasis will be given to the consequences of contact between European/American groups and the indigenous Native societies.
Recommended: READ 088  or higher.
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply research skills to find primary historical documents (print & digital media).
  • Describe the general societal characteristics of the major Native societies in the region.
  • Analyze the development of the PNW region, using historical methods, from the time of the early Native societies to the present.
  • Determine which events/movements/individuals were integral to the development of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho from the exploration period to the present.
  • Analyze cause and effect relationships in past events and human interactions.
  • Recognize the effect of the past upon present decision-making.
  • Evaluate historical data.
  • Practice group interactions within projects.
Course Topics:
  1. Overview of regional Native American societies.
  2. Examine the geopolitics of the Exploration period (Russians, Spanish, British, French, and Americans).
  3. Explore the regional, national, and international aspects of the settlement of the region.
  4. Examine the growth and development of the individual states (Washington, Oregon, and Idaho).
  5. Study the impacts of regional growth on the Native societies.
