HIST& 147 - US History II

Survey of the significant individuals and events that have shaped the growth and development of the United States. Particular attention will be given to the political, economic, religious, and cultural foundations of this development. This course focuses on the period from the 1830s to World War I.
Recommended: READ 088  or higher.
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply research skills to find primary historical documents (print and digital media).
  • Analyze the development of the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries, using historical methods.
  • Analyze cause and effect relationships in past events and human interactions.
  • Recognize the effect of the past upon present decision-making.
  • Evaluate historical data.
  • Practice group interactions within projects.
Course Topics:
  1. Brief review of pre-1830 American history.
  2. Demographic overview of the United States in the early 19th century.
  3. Examination of significant domestic issues from the 1830s to WWI.
  4. Examination of significant foreign policy issues from the 1830s to WWI.
  5. Analysis of symbolic individuals/groups from the 1830s to WWI.
  6. Brief overview of demographic changes in the United States from the 1830s to WWI.
