HIST& 146 - US History I Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 Survey of the significant individuals and events that have shaped the growth and development of the United States from the pre-colonial period to the 1830s. Particular attention will be given to the political, economic, religious, and cultural foundations of this development. Recommended: READ 088 or higher. Course Outcomes:
- Apply research skills to find primary historical documents (print & digital media).
- Analyze the development of the United States from the pre-colonial period to the 1830s, using historical methods.
- Determine which events/movements/individuals were integral to the development of the United States from the pre-colonial period to the 1830s.
- Analyze cause and effect relationships in past events and human interactions.
- Recognize the effect of the past upon present decision-making.
- Evaluate historical data.
- Practice group interaction within projects.
Course Topics:
- Brief review of early Native American societies.
- Overview of the Colonial period.
- Demographic overview (highlighting changes) of the British Colonies and the United States (17th - 19th centuries).
- Examination of significant domestic issues from the pre-colonial period to the 1830s.
- Analysis of symbolic individuals/groups from the pre-colonial period to the 1830s.
