HIST& 146 - US History I

Survey of the significant individuals and events that have shaped the growth and development of the United States from the pre-colonial period to the 1830s. Particular attention will be given to the political, economic, religious, and cultural foundations of this development.
Recommended: READ 088   or higher.
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply research skills to find primary historical documents (print & digital media).
  • Analyze the development of the United States from the pre-colonial period to the 1830s, using historical methods.
  • Determine which events/movements/individuals were integral to the development of the United States from the pre-colonial period to the 1830s.
  • Analyze cause and effect relationships in past events and human interactions.
  • Recognize the effect of the past upon present decision-making.
  • Evaluate historical data.
  • Practice group interaction within projects.
Course Topics:
  1. Brief review of early Native American societies.
  2. Overview of the Colonial period.
  3. Demographic overview (highlighting changes) of the British Colonies and the United States (17th - 19th centuries).
  4. Examination of significant domestic issues from the pre-colonial period to the 1830s.
  5. Analysis of symbolic individuals/groups from the pre-colonial period to the 1830s.
