PHYS& 221 - Engineering Physics I With Lab Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 4 LAB hours per week: 2 This is part one of a calculus-based physics sequence intended for physical science and engineering majors. Topics include linear and rotational motion, forces, kinetic and potential energy, momentum, and translational and rotational equilibrium. Lab work required. Formerly: PHYS 201. Prerequisite(s): MATH& 151 with a grade or C or higher or appropriate placement; grade of C or higher in ENGL 087 or appropriate placement; or permission of the Science Division Chair or designee. Recommended: READ 088 or higher. Course Outcomes:
- Demonstrate knowledge of one and twodimensional kinematics.
- Apply Newton’s Laws as they relate to motion and forces in static, dynamic, circular, and rotation situations.
- Describe the significance of conservation laws in physics; particularly conservation of energy and momentum.
- Analyze a written problem or observed phenomena, simplify it, identify the key known and unknown features, make predictions, and evaluate those predictions using the principles of physics.
- Solve quantitative problems related to motion, forces and conservation laws using algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
- Design and carry out laboratory experiments that relate to motion, forces, and conservation laws.
Course Topics:
- Physical quantities, vectors, units, and conversions
- One and two-dimensional kinematics
- Forces and Newtons Laws of Motion
- Statics and dynamics
- Circular and rotational motion
- Energy, momentum, and principles of conservation
