WELD 153 - Shielded Metal Arc Welding III


Credits: 1-17
LEC hours per week: 5
LAB hours per week: 24
Additional experience and training in safe SMAW welding procedures and the opportunity to complete AWS/WABO certification tests.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in WELD 152  and instructor permission.
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply safe cylinder handling and SMAW equipment practices.
  • Demonstrate proper set up, adjustment, and closing practices for joining and cutting steel materials.
  • Interpret shop drawings or prints to construct welding objective assemblies.
  • Identify and apply the correct process to assigned welding tasks.
  • Create welding objective assemblies according to specifications.
  • Evaluate final weld assembly according to AWS standards in publication D1.1.
  • Complete qualification tests.
Course Topics:
  1. Use and care for fuel gas welding and cutting apparatuses.
  2. Portable and shop welding systems, grinders, vices, clamps, drills, files, air driven tools, punches, shears, and saws.
  3. Measuring methods.
  4. Fabrication methods and material types.
  5. E-6010 and E-7018 electrode types.
  6. Grinding equipment operation.
  7. Print reading and weld symbol principles.
