WELD 152 - Shielded Metal Arc Welding II


Credits: 1-17

LAB hours per week: 24
Training in safe and proper SMAW arc welding procedures and techniques will be covered, including arc welding equipment setup, E-6010 and E-7018 electrode practice, shop work practice, demonstrations, and classroom presentations.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in WELD 151  and instructor permission.
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply safe cylinder handling and SMAW equipment practices.
  • Demonstrate proper set up, adjustment, and closing practices for joining and cutting steel materials.
  • Interpret shop drawings or prints to construct welding objective assemblies.
  • Identify and apply the correct process to assigned welding tasks.
  • Create welding objective assemblies according to specifications.
  • Evaluate final weld assembly according to AWS standards in publication D1.1.
Course Topics:
  1. Use and care for fuel gas welding and cutting apparatuses.
  2. E-6010 and E-7018 electrode types.
  3. Portable and shop welding systems, grinders, vices, clamps, drills, files, air driven tools, punches, shears, and breaks.
  4. Measuring methods.
  5. Fabrication methods and material types.
  6. Grinding equipment operation.
  7. Print reading and weld symbol principles.
