WELD 151 - Shielded Metal Arc Welding I

Entry-level student training in safe practices of fuel gas cutting/welding and shielded metal arc welding. Topics include equipment operation, industry practices, arc welding fundamentals, material preparation methods, basic electricity, metals and electrodes, shop work ethics, and print reading/layout procedures.
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply safe cylinder handling and SMAW equipment practices.
  • Demonstrate proper set up, adjustment, and closing practices for joining and cutting steel materials.
  • Interpret shop drawings or prints to construct welding objective assemblies.
  • Identify and apply the correct process to assigned welding tasks.
  • Create welding objective assemblies according to specifications.
  • Evaluate final weld assembly according to AWS standards in publication D1.1.
Course Topics:
  1. Use and care for fuel gas welding and cutting apparatuses.
  2. Portable and shop welding systems, grinders, vices, clamps, drills, files, air driven tools, punches, shears, and breaks.
  3. Measuring methods.
  4. Fabrication methods and material types.
  5. Goal of welding certification on plate using an E-6010 electrode type.
  6. Grinding equipment operation.
  7. Blueprint reading and weld symbol principles.
