Students prepare for entry-level employment in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry including energy management systems. The technical skills and knowledge acquired in this program will also provide students with the troubleshooting and mechanical skills necessary to service, repair, and install equipment in these areas.
Graduates of the HVACR Certificate will enter the workforce with a knowledge base and solid skillset, making them attractive potential employees for HVAC companies. They will have the necessary skills to recover, evacuate and recharge air conditioning equipment, and safely perform electrical and mechanical troubleshooting. Students who complete the certificate will also earn their EPA 608 refrigerant handler’s card.
Certificate Outcomes:
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of electrical safety, theory, interpreting electrical wiring diagrams, knowledge of electrical components, fundamentals of motors and capacitors, knowledge of NEC, electrical troubleshooting and problem solving, knowledge of electrical tools and instruments.
- Apply basic knowledge of fundamentals and theory of Air conditioning system, relative codes, refrigerants and refrigerant oils, system components, electrical, recovery, recycling, reclaiming, leak detection and testing, evacuation and charging, troubleshooting air conditioning systems, and knowledge and use of tools and instruments for air conditioning.
- Utilize basic knowledge of electric heat theory and application, safety, system components, installation and service, thermostats, air flow, troubleshooting and problem solving, and use of tools and instrument for electric heat.
- Apply knowledge of gas and oil heat combustion theory and heating fuels, installation and service, gas piping, venting, electrical, gas heat troubleshooting and service and use of related tools and instruments. Model safety practices and knowledge of different heating system components.
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of heat pump theory and electrical and mechanical components; meet core competencies set by the national accreditation standards. Utilize heat pump troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, as well as knowledge of tools and instruments required for work with heat pumps.
- Develop a basic knowledge of core competencies of theory, electrical and mechanical, for light commercial and industrial refrigeration. Take part in troubleshooting and problem solving light commercial refrigeration.
Transferability: This certificate is designed for students planning to enter their chosen career upon graduation. Often only selected credits are considered transferable to public or private universities.
