CHEM& 110 - Chemical Concepts With Lab Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 4 LAB hours per week: 2 This course will provide a fundamental survey of chemistry and is intended for Nursing and Allied Health majors in fulfillment of the pre-nursing (or health care related) program lab science requirements. Topics will include an introduction to inorganic, organic, and biological chemistry from a health science perspective. Formerly: CHEM 101. Prerequisite(s): MATH 014 or AMATH 106 with a grade of C or higher or appropriate placement; ENGL 087 or AENG 100 with a grade of C or higher or appropriate placement; or permission of the Science Division Chair or designee. Recommended: READ 088 . Course Outcomes:
- Solve metric conversions, and caloric content calculations.
- Compute atomic and formula masses.
- Differentiate precision from accuracy.
- Identify atoms, subatomic particles, and isotopes.
- Classify the families on the periodic table according to their chemical natures.
- Identify properties of nuclear particles/emissions.
- Match isotopes with their therapeutic uses in radiologic medicine.
- Apply the rules of inorganic and organic nomenclature to ions and simple molecules; distinguish ionic from covalent bonding.
- Describe the behavior of solids, liquids and gases in terms of intermolecular forces of attraction.
- Identify components of a chemical equation.
- Apply solution concentrations in a variety of units to clinical data.
- Differentiate osmosis and diffusion.
- Perform dosage calculations involving patient weight, drug concentration, and volume.
- Distinguish common organic functional groups.
- Describe the pH behavior of household solutions, buffers, and physiologic fluids.
