MATH 014 - Pre-Algebra In Context

Credits: 5
LEC hours per week: 5
MATH 014 is an exploration of mathematics intended to increase exposure, skills, confidence, and motivation for further mathematical learning. Real numbers, percents, patterns, data, measurement, geometry, algebraic concepts, and computational skills will be studied within meaningful contexts that derive from the world around us.
Prerequisite(s): Appropriate placement or permission of the Mathematics Department.
Course Outcomes:

  • Read, write, estimate with, and compare decimal numbers involving place values from the thousandths through the billions.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; solve problems that combine these operations.
  • Read, write, and compare benchmark fractions; add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals; solve problems that combine these operations.
  • Convert between fractions, decimals and percents; use percents in various contexts including finance and percent change.
  • Read and interpret bar, line, circle, and scatter graphs; communicate results in writing.
  • Calculate and interpret the mean, median, mode, and range of a data set.
  • Use Order of Operations to add, subtract, multiply, and divide negative and positive real numbers; evaluate simple algebraic formulas such as interest, distance, volume, and circumference.
  • Solve one- and two-step linear equations.
  • Accurately measure using the standard and metric systems and perform simple unit conversions within and between the systems.
  • Construct ratios and proportions and apply them in problem solving.
  • Apply geometric concepts including lines, area, perimeter, volume, polygons, and circles in problem solving.
  • Employ problem-solving techniques that improve reading and understanding problems, making predictions, determining strategies, documenting solutions, and checking answers.
  • Produce clear and complete written solutions.
  • Use basic functions of a scientific calculator and determine degree of precision needed to solve problems.
  • Explain the difference between a fixed mindset and growth mindset.
  • Analyze real-work situations incorporating course topics and effectively communicate the results.
  • Apply study skills that improve achievement.
