MATH 037 - Corequisite for Math& 107 and Math& 131

Credits: 4
LEC hours per week: 4
MATH 037 is an intermediate algebra course to be taken concurrently with MATH& 107  or MATH& 131 . The course focuses on developing and applying numeric, algebraic, graphic, and metacognitive skills necessary for success in MATH& 107 , Math in Society, and in MATH& 131 , Mathematics for Elementary Education I. Mandatory P/F grading.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in MATH 071 , MATH 014 , CAP 014 , HSC 014 , or AMATH 106 , appropriate placement, or permission of the Mathematics Department.
Corequisite(s): MATH& 107  or MATH& 131 .
Course Outcomes:
  • Use Order of Operations to evaluate expressions including those with fractions and rational exponents.
  • Calculate with and convert between decimals, fractions, and percentages and interpret their significance in a variety of contexts.
  • Translate between simple word phrases and mathematical notation, using variables to represent quantities where necessary.
  • Evaluate a formula given a list of variable values.
  • Demonstrate the relationship between linear equations, their graphs, and their solutions.
  • Demonstrate techniques that improve learning and problem solving.
  • Use technology as a tool for calculating and graphing.
  • Explain the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.
  • Practice productive struggle to creatively solve problems, enhance metacognition, and strengthen independent learning.
  • Access and use educational resources and strategies to supplement learning.
  • Engage with peers and the course instructor to build relationships and develop community.
  • Use decimal place value to read and order numbers on a number line (131 only).
  • Measure length in inches, feet, yards, millimeters, centimeters, and meters. (131 only)
  • Convert between decimal and scientific notation. (107 only)
  • Measure time in seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, quarters, and years and convert between these units of time. (107 only)
  • Solve a multivariable equation or formula for a given variable. (107 only)
  • Read and interpret graphs, charts, and tables. (107 only)
  • Classify a relationship between two variables as linear, exponential, logarithmic, or none of these. (107 only)
  • Solve simple single variable equations involving exponentials and logarithms.(107)
