WELD 101 - Oxy/Fuel Welding, Cutting, and SMAW 1 Credits: 3 LEC hours per week: 3 Welding theory designed to explain welding safety, industry practices, and Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) processes. Students will learn the safe handling and operation of Oxy/fuel welding, brazing and cutting equipment; contrast SMAW 6010, and 7018 electrodes; and material preparation methods. Introduction to basic print reading and layout. Discuss the importance of professional and ethical shop behavior and welding safety. Course Outcomes:
- Explain how to test oxy/fuel Equipment for fuel and oxygen leaks.
- Explain how to assemble, light, adjust, extinguish, and disassemble oxy/fuel equipment.
- Describe how to maintain the major components of oxy/fuel welding equipment including cylinders, regulators, hoses, and torches.
- Explain the chemical reaction that takes place in any oxy/fuel flame.
- Define what a neutral, carburizing and oxidizing flame is.
- Understand the functions of SMAW equipment.
- Describe various welding positions including: 2F, 3F, 4F, 2G, 3G, 4G.
- Define the meaning of electrode classifications (E7018) and (E6011).
- Interpret basic blueprints and shop drawings.
- Discuss the importance of professional, ethical, and safe welding shop behavior.
