AHSE 174 - Transcultural Competency for Health Professional

An introduction to basic concepts of transcultural competency in Nursing and Allied Health with a focus on the applied aspects of cultural difference. Examines how different cultural communities relate to health care in terms of behavior, attitude, and policy and how these are transformed into practices and standards in the medical community, impacting quality of service and producing a given outcome. Formerly: HO 174.
Course Outcomes:
  • Identify cultural difference and their application to healthcare professionals.
  • Conduct a cultural self assessment to identify attitudes, beliefs, knowledge and skills that may impact health care delivery.
  • Identify the guidelines for using interpreter services and other language services.
  • Explore how communication and language variations affect provider client interactions.
  • Compare and contrast the roles, rights, and expectations of employers, employees, and healthcare customers as related to cultural differences or conflict.

  1. Awareness of transcultural issues in public health
  2. Hispanic/Latino and Native American transcultural competency in medical treatment
  3. Asian and Middle Eastern transcultural competency in medical treatment
  4. Stereotyping and its effect in treating patients in transcultural situations
  5. Various forms of verbal and non-verbal communication in health care
  6. Conduct a cultural self-audit
