HVACR 263 - Electric Heat, Heat Pumps, and Solar Heat

LAB hours per week: 6
This course covers electric heat and heat pump technology for air-to-air, geothermal water-to-air, and water-to-water heat pumps, and solar heating. Students will learn installation, electrical components, operation, maintenance, service, and repair of electric heat, heat pumps. An introduction to solar hydronic heating systems will also be included. Applicable Codes NEC, UMC, IMC will be discussed. Students will take the national electric heat and heat pump certification exams.
Course Outcomes:
  • Identify electrical components and circuits used in electric heat and heat pump systems.
  • Draw control and line schematics.
  • Explain the operating sequence of electric heat and heat pump systems.
  • Troubleshoot electric heat and heat pump systems.
  • Differentiate between passive and active solar systems.
  • Examine the effect of declination on the sun’s radiation during winter and summer seasons.
  • Describe the typical components in a liquid-based solar system.
  • Explain the operation of solar domestic hot water and swimming pool solar-heating system.
