MEDA 150 - Navigator Skills and Coaching Credits: 2 LEC hours per week: 2 This course defines the scope of practice of the patient navigator and applies navigator skills to coaching clients regarding their health maintenance, disease prevention, compliance with treatment plan, community resources, and adaptations relevant to patient needs. The principles and techniques of motivational interviewing are introduced Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the Medical Assistant program. Course Outcomes:
- Explain the relationship between the roles of a Medical Assistant and a patient navigator.
- Recognize professional boundaries.
- Demonstrate patient advocacy.
- Coach patients regarding:
- office policies
- medical encounters
- Identify techniques for coaching a patient related to specific needs.
- Demonstrate motivational interviewing and Teach-Back techniques.
- Use a list of community resources to facilitate referrals.
