BIOL 250 - Introduction to Digestive System

This special topics course will examine the digestive system and is intended for Nursing and Allied Health majors, in the fulfillment of the pre-nursing (or healthcare related) program lab science requirements, that began the previously offered Anatomy and Physiology series (BIOL& 251, 252, 253) by passing BIOL& 251 (A&P I), but will complete the series with the currently offered BIOL& 242  (A&P II). Laboratory work may include study of models, histology, and online simulations related to the digestive system.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in BIOL& 251.
Corequisite(s): Concurrent enrollment in BIOL& 242  required.
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply major terms, vocabulary, methods and concepts relevant to animal behavior.
  • Interpret primary literature articles in the field of animal behavior.
  • Formulate questions and hypotheses to explain behaviors observed during field studies.
  • Solve problems associated with the evolutionary stable strategy (ESS) using game theory.
  • Explain the evolution of different reproductive strategies (male and female) and mating strategies (e.g., monogamy, polygyny).
  • Explain the evolution of animal signals, why they evolve, and how they communicate.
  • Use lab equipment safely and with technical skill.
