PHYS& 116 - General Physics III With Lab

Credits: 5
LEC hours per week: 4
LAB hours per week: 2
This is part three of an algebra-based physics sequence intended for non-physical science majors. Topics include electricity and magnetism, optics, and selected topics in modern physics (relativity, structure of the atom, quantum theory, etc.). Lab work required. Formerly: PHYS 123.
Course Outcomes:
  • Build simple DC circuits and predict their behavior.
  • Describe the interaction of electric and magnetic fields.
  • Analyze electromagnetic waves in terms of ray and wave optics.
  • Describe the modern physics principles of special relativity and quantum theory.
  • Solve quantitative problems related to related to electricity and magnetism, optics, and topics from modern physics using algebra and trigonometry.
  • Design and carry out laboratory experiments that relate to DC circuits and elementary optics.
Course Topics:
  1. DC Circuits
  2. Magnetism, EM induction, and simple AC circuits
  3. Ray and wave optics
  4. Special relativity
  5. Quantum physics and the atom
