ANTH& 206 - Cultural Anthropology Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 Holistic and comparative study of culture in selected communities around the world which illustrate unity and diversity in human culture. Formerly: ANTH 202. Course Outcomes:
- Describe, explain, and operationalize the concept of culture.
- Analyze the interaction of culture, biology, and the environment.
- Examine the complexities of social relations among genders and including marriage, kinship, and descent.
- Examine the economic, political, social systems, language, religion, and arts of a group that identify it as a culture.
Course Topics:
- Definition of culture
- Culture’s constituents: language, religion, art, economic and political systems, social stratification (including class, race, and ethnicity), social relations (marriage, kinship, and descent), sex, and gender
- Ethnography and ethics of practice of ethnographers
- World systems and colonialism
- Globalization and its effect on people and culture
