Holistic and comparative study of culture in selected communities around the world which illustrate unity and diversity in human culture. Formerly: ANTH 202.
Course Outcomes:
  • Describe, explain, and operationalize the concept of culture.
  • Analyze the interaction of culture, biology, and the environment.
  • Examine the complexities of social relations among genders and including marriage, kinship, and descent.
  • Examine the economic, political, social systems, language, religion, and arts of a group that identify it as a culture.
Course Topics:
  1. Definition of culture
  2. Culture’s constituents: language, religion, art, economic and political systems, social stratification (including class, race, and ethnicity), social relations (marriage, kinship, and descent), sex, and gender
  3. Ethnography and ethics of practice of ethnographers
  4. World systems and colonialism
  5. Globalization and its effect on people and culture
