ART 260 - Ceramics and Sculpture I

An introduction of fundamental skills and methods needed to form creative and diverse ceramic sculpture. This includes learning coil, pinch, slab, paddle and wheel methods, while theory, history, aesthetics and design principles are all discussed. Also learning how different glazes and firing techniques produce a broad range of beauty. Personal creativity is always emphasized. Lab hours required and material to be purchased.
Course Outcomes:

Develop and demonstrate a personal sculptural style
Use proper ceramics terminology
Recognize and practice proper health and safety protocol
Explain ceramics histroy and analyze how it affects the way we work today
Construct clay projects using hand building techniques
Utilize a vqariety of techniques for surface decoration and use of mosaic tiles
Throw a clay project showing increased mastery of the potter’s wheel
Translate human anatomy knowledge into sculpture
Select proper mixes for glaze coloring
Participate in different firing methods, comparing and contrasting the different results
Demonstrate flat relief techniques
