ART 230 - Painting IV


Credits: 4
Advanced exploration of the various methods of painting. Emphasis on composition and presentation of acrylic painting projects, but students may choose to work with other media. Lab hours required and materials to be purchased.
Course Outcomes:
  • Formulate a personal painting style.
  • Apply personal painting style to a series of works.
  • Explain and apply major terms, vocabulary, methods, concepts, and theories relevant to painting.
  • Construct acrylic paintings from observation and imagination employing new techniques.
  • Demonstrate ethical and responsible use of media and information.

  1. Development of a personal painting style and motifs in a series of works
  2. Art vocabulary and painting terminology
  3. Color theory
  4. Types of brushes and brushstrokes
  5. Painting supports: paper, canvas, wood, illustration board
  6. Acrylic painting techniques
  7. Composition
  8. Painting from observation
  9. The formal elements of art and the principles of design
  10. Continued study of the styles of art: naturalism, realism, semi-abstraction, abstraction
  11. Famous artists and the history of painting
  12. Developing stylistic choices and choosing one’s own subject matter
  13. Developing a personal motif
  14. Honing one’s own style of painting
  15. Ethical and responsible use of media and information
