ART 107 - Fundamentals of Digital Art

An introductory course in which students explore the practical uses and creative possibilities of digital media through Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Emphasis is on understanding the basic tools and techniques for individual expression and visual problem-solving. No experience necessary.
Course Outcomes:
  • Identify the difference between vector and raster graphics.
  • Identify basic tools and techniques of both Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Select and apply the appropriate tools for desired results.
  • Apply critical thinking skills to visual problem solving.
  • Define the potential application of digital skills in a variety of work environments.
  • Express topics of personal interest and meaning through digital art.
  • Explain and apply major terms, vocabulary, methods, concepts, and theories relevant to digital art.
  • Demonstrate ethical and responsible use of media and information.
Course Topics:
  1. Major terms, vocabulary, methods, concepts, and theories relevant to digital art
  2. Ethical and responsible use of media and information
  3. Adobe Illustrator:
    • Draw and fill vector paths; emphasis on Illustrator’s pen tool
    • Create complex paths using pathfinder and path commands
    • Create custom brushes
    • Create gradients and blends
    • Work with type - selecting appropriate fonts and treatment for working with words
  4. Adobe Photoshop:
    • Make and edit precise selections in Photoshop
    • Retouch, mask, and enhance photos using image adjustments
    • Distort, airbrush, manipulate color, and use layer blending and adjustment layers for expressive qualities
    • Use source images appropriately and responsibility
    • Work with personal photographers
