ASL& 123 - American Sign Language III

This is the third and last course in a series introducing students to the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). This course expands on the knowledge of the ASL vocabulary and grammar learned in ASL& 122  and examines appropriate ways to express emotion and opinion. Students will sign for the class from a creative work: poetry, a play, an excerpt from a novel, or some other written work approved by the instructor. Formerly: COMM 109.
Prerequisite(s): C or better in ASL& 122  or equivalent course.
Course Outcomes:
  • Master at least 350 new signs for words, phrases, and abstract ideas.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of basic concepts, rules, and functions of ASL through application in a consistent manner.
  • Demonstrate improved speed and fluency of signing using proper rhythm and body movement, with appropriate mouth movements and non-manual behavior.
  • Demonstrate their ability to maintain an in-depth conversation with other ASL users of varied skill levels.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of the deaf culture including education, employment, and other life functions.
