ASL& 121 - American Sign Language I Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 Introduction to American Sign Language including basic sign language vocabulary and deaf culture. Students will learn to communicate in basic conversation with individuals who are deaf or have impaired hearing. From a variety of media, students will be exposed to techniques and strategies used by the profoundly deaf and the hearing-impaired to cope with life functions. Formerly: COMM 107. Course Outcomes:
- Master a vocabulary of at least 300 signs for letters, words, numbers, unique pronouns, verbs and classifiers, being able to translate ideas from ASL to English and English to ASL using acquired vocabluary.
- Ability to hold basic conversations using basic ASL vocabulary, including proper syntax and facial grammar.
- Demonstrate knowledge of issues common to the deaf culture, its history and values.
- Describe and discuss ways hearing people interact with the deaf community.
- Ability to identify elements of the deaf culture that are different and/or similar to their own.
