BUS 234 - Medical Coding


Credits: 5
LEC hours per week: 5
Fundamental course in assigning medical procedure (CPT) codes, diagnosis (ICD-10-CM) and HCPCS codes for use in insurance billing and medical record keeping. Designed for medical coders, medical assistants, billing specialists and health information professionals. Formerly: OT 234.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in BUS 280 .
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply rules of medical coding to accurately locate codes in the CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS.
  • Interpret and apply information contained in guidelines/indexes.
  • Utilize modifiers used in coding for optimum reimbursement.
  • Identify levels of Evaluation and Management services.
  • Accurately link CPT and ICD-10 Codes to prove medical necessity.
  • Ability to sequence CPT codes for optimum reimbursement.
  • Demonstrate use of coding conventions.
  • Ability to assign to highest level of specificity and properly sequence ICD-10 codes.
