CNC 103 - Machining Processes Credits: 5 LAB hours per week: 7.500 This class is designed to teach the basic operation of common machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and band saws. Also covered are cutting edge configuration and what features are produced by them. Lessons are based on standard industry practice and will be taught in a lab setting. Course Outcomes:
- Calculate the RPM to spin the stock when knowing the material’s cutting speed and size of stock.
- Calcualte the RPM to spin a drill bit when knowing the materials’ cutting speed and size of drill.
- Describe a ridged setup.
- Perform an outside turning operation.
- Perform a center/spot drill operation.
- Perform a drilling operation.
- Identify the different types of drills.
- Identify the different types of taps.
- Identify a milling operation.
- Explain the use of an end mill.
- Explain the use of a fly cutter.
- Explain what features on a cutter makes a cutter cut.
- Perform a grooving operation.
- Explain when using a band saw, how many teeth should be in contact with the work piece at all times.
- Identify the different sets on a band saw blade.
