CNC 101 - CNC Operations I

Credits: 5
LAB hours per week: 7.500
This class is designed to teach the student how to setup, operate and maintain CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) machines. It covers the following: how to start up the machine, move the machine’s axes, set tool length offsets, and how to set part zero. Lessons are based on standard industry practice and will be taught in a lab setting.
Course Outcomes:
  • Identify a CNC program number.
  • Identify G00, G01, G02, and G03 in a G-code program.
  • Identify basic M-codes.
  • Identify the x, y, and z axis on a CNC milling center.
  • Identify the x and z axis on a CNC turning center.
  • Demonstrate how to power up and home the CNC milling center.
  • Demonstrate how to power up and home the CNC turning center.
  • Explain machine home.
  • Identify a work offset G54-G59.
  • Identify the manual pulse generator. i. Demonstrate ow to set the MPG (manual puse generator) to the desired increments of feed. ii. Demonstrate how to jog the machine on each of its axes.
  • Demonstrate how to correctly install tools in the various tool holders.
  • Demonstrate how to correctly install a vise on the milling table. i. Identify the condition of the vise. ii. Demonstrate how to use a back plunger indicator to dial the vise in to an axis within a tolerance of .001”. iii. Identify and use proper mounting hardware.
  • Demonstrate how to install the tools int he machine’s tool carousel.
  • Demonstrate how to touch off each tool and et tool height (tool length offset).
  • Demonstrate how to use an edge finder, locate the edges of rough stock and establish part reference zero.
  • Check all fluid levels on the machine.
  • Run a program to produce parts on the CNC milling center.
