ELA 034 - ELA Washington State History

This course is designed for students seeking an adult high school diploma through the High School 21 program, students studying for the GED exam, and students seeking educational enrichment. In this course, students will investigate Washington state history and government through a variety of multimedia, reading, writing, art, and music. Students will get a foundational overview of Washington state, its history and government, beginning with the geographical location and features, exploration and settlement, statehood and the structure of government and culminating in a project to be submitted to the HS 21 portfolio to demonstrate competency. Students who successfully complete this course earn HS 21+ credit for the Washington state History requirement.
Course Outcomes:
- Evaluate the events in Washington state history through exploration of texts, audio visual media, fine art, and music of historical eras.
- Analyze how people, events, and movements have shaped the history of Washington state.
- Explain state and local government and procedures.
- Interpret the rights and responsibilities of citizens in the Washington State Constitution, and current state and local governmental issues, including electoral issues.
- Synthesize information from historical texts.
- Compose assignments utilizing college-level note-taking strategies.
- Evaluate historical documents and the meaning of new vocabulary.
- Demonstrate academic research and writing skills utilizing computers and the appropriate software.
- Evaluate multimedia information for quality and credibility to produce authentic written work.
- Interpret and respond to historical information through spoken and written assignments.
