ELA 014 - ELA Communications

In this course, ELA students improve their ability to communicate in English in personal, social, and workplace environments, and acquire academic skills to advance in college and career pathways. Upon successful completion of the course, the successful student will achieve foundational reading, speaking and listening, and language anchors level A informed by the College Career and Readiness Standards for Adult Education produced by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education.
Course Outcomes:
  • Use context cues to identify the meaning of unfamiliar words.
  • Identify and summarize the major events in a narrative.
  • Identify patterns of spoken words, syllables, and sounds.
  • Know and apply phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
  • Set educational goals as they relate to roles as workers, citizens, and family members; report progress on these goals; and revise and update goals quarterly.
Course Topics:
  1. Topics are selected using College Career and Readiness Standards (CCRS) for Speaking and Listening; Phonics review, intonation, stress, and articulation are taught using short stories, dialogue, songs, and plays.
