ELA 005 - ELA Foundations Credits: 1-11 LEC hours per week: 9 LAB hours per week: 4 This foundational skills course is directed toward fostering students’ understanding and working knowledge of concepts of print, the alphabetic principle, and other basic conventions of the English writing system. The skills are not an end in and of themselves; rather, they are necessary and important components of an effective, comprehensive reading program designed to develop proficient readers with the capacity to comprehend texts across a range of types and disciplines. Standards for this course are based on the English Language Proficiency Standards and the College and Career Readiness Standards produced by the US Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Adult Education. Course Outcomes:
- Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds.
- Apply phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words in real-world contexts.
- Implement reading strategies to improve accuracy and fluency.
- Demonstrate basic computer skills by accessing online learning platforms.
- Set educational goals as they relate to one’s roles as workers, citizens, and family members; report progress on these goals; and revise and update them quarterly.
