                  ENGL 270 - Genre Fiction Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 This course is an investigation into a particular genre of fiction chosen by the instructor. Examples of genres might include science fiction, romance, detective, western, dystopian, mystery, horror, etc. Works may represent a variety of media, eras, or cultures of origin, but they will be united by the structures, archetypes, and themes found in that chosen genre. Formerly: LIT 270. Course Outcomes:  
	- Examine the primary function of narrative in literature, particularly how it relates to the chosen genre and how it creates meaning and context for our lives.
 
	- Formulate a theory about the role of a specific genre in our culture and the limitations it places on narratives.
 
	- Identify the various elements and themes that define a specific genre and explain how sub-genres are created.
 
	- Distinguish the unique voices of authors from a variety of social, political, and economic backgrounds within the chosen genre.
 
	- Appraise the ways a writer’s work can be valuable both culturally and personally.
 
	- Employ appropriate literary terminology when discussing and/or writing about the genre.
